Distinguishing Linking Verbs from Helping Verbs

Objective:
Students will distinguish verbs being used as a linking verb and verbs being used as a helping verb.

Activities:
Anticipatory Set:
• Show “Shoulda Woulda Coulda” Video to review helping verbs. Review which words are often used as helping verbs and which are always used as helping verbs.
Process:
• Review the definition for all three types of verbs on the board. Write each verb in three different columns and list three examples.
Guided Practice:
• Have students list words under all three categories.
• Play Linking Verb and Helping Verb Sorting Game. Students will have a sentence written on a card, and they must identify if a verb is being used as a linking verb or helping verb. They will sort them into two categories. We will play as a class.
• Explain the directions of the “Helping Verbs and Linking Verbs” Worksheet.
Independent Practice/Check for Understanding:
• Students will complete the “Helping Verbs and Linking Verbs” Worksheet
Closure:
• Put three sentences on the board and have students fill in the missing helping verb as an exit ticket.
