Fall Lesson

Grade: 1st

Subject: Science

Standards:
K-2-ETS1-1. Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.
ETS1.A: Defining and Delimiting Engineering Problems
1-ESS1-2. Make observations at different times of year to relate the amount of daylight to the time of year.
ESS1.B: Earth and the Solar System

Objective:
Students will relate visuals to the idea of the season of Fall.

Procedure:
1. Anticipatory Set: Ask students to think of words that make them think of Fall. Record student responses on the SMART Board. If a student gives an answer that seems a little bit obscure, ask the student why that word makes him or her think of Fall.
2. Process: Tell the students that they just came up with this giant list of words that makes them think of fall. Now, they are going to use these words to help them make a collage about fall.
3. Ask the students if they know what I mean by collage. Call on a student to tell the class what I mean by collage. If a student gives an answer that is almost right, tell them they are close, and see if another student can help them. In the event none of the students know what I mean by collage, tell them that a collage is a collection of pictures on one paper.
4. Tell the students that they will be making a collage today by cutting out pictures from a magazine that remind them of fall.
5. Tell the students that they will go to the back table and get a magazine and a piece of construction paper.
6. Students will get a piece of construction paper and go back to their seats.
7. Show students what the finished product of the collage is supposed to look like.
8. Guided Practice: Show students one of the magazines. Open it to a random page. Model thinking aloud by asking myself if the picture reminds me of Fall. If I say it does, say that I will cut it out. If not, say that I will not cut it out and find something else that reminds me of fall on another page. Tell the students that I am only cutting out pictures that remind me of Fall: not Winter, not Spring, not Summer. Also, tell them that anything can remind them of Fall, but make sure they can explain how it reminds them of Fall. Remind students to put their name on the back of the construction paper. Also, refer to the list on the SMART Board to help them to look for pictures that make them think of Fall.
9. Independent Practice:/Check for Understanding Students will cut pictures out from the magazines they have chosen and glue them onto the construction paper.
10. Walk around the room to see if any students need help figuring out if a picture reminds them of Fall. Make sure they are cutting out pictures for the right season.
11. Students will clean up materials.
12. Call on some students to share what they put on their collage and why. I will only call on students who want to share.
13. Closure: Ask students about the common themes they have noticed while they shared their collages.

Materials:
