Problem-Solving: Missing or Extra Information

Grade: 4th (Resource)

Subject: Math

Standards:
4.NBT: Number and Operations in Base Ten
B. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.
5. Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
4.OA: Operations and Algebraic Thinking
A. Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.
3. Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

Objective:
Students will identify what information is missing or is not needed in a word problem.

Activities:
Anticipatory Set:
• Students will talk to each other about which information is missing or which information is extra information in two-word problems posted on the SMART Board.
Process:
• Model thinking aloud the first three steps of solving a word problem to look for missing or extra information.
Guided Practice:
• Students will come up to the SMART Board to figure out which information is missing information or extra information. Guide them through the first three steps of modeling thinking aloud to help them.
• Play a card game with the students in which each card contains parts of a multi-digit multiplication word problem. Students must figure out which piece of information is extra information.
Independent Practice/Check for Understanding:
• Students will create a poster with their own word problem written on the poster, and a picture of students showing the problem, along with the extra information. Students will use the steps of the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) to write their word problems.
Closure:
• Discuss three W’s. (What did we learn today? So what? Now what?) about looking for missing or extra information in a word problem.

Materials:
• SMART Board
• Cards for Word Problem Game
• Construction Paper
• Brainstorming Sheet for Word Problem
• Checklist for Word Problem
• Markers
• Crayons
• Colored Pencils
• Cloze Reading Handout

Differentiation: Students who are having trouble writing a word problem on their own will get a Cloze Reading Handout to help them write their word problem.

Assessment:
• Multi-Digit Multiplication Word Problem Poster
